Rabbits’ teeth grow continuously throughout their life, at a rate of about 2-3mm per week. Rabbits require a high fibre diet to ensure their teeth wear evenly and to prevent overgrowth which causes discomfort, abscesses and an inability to eat.

Indications of dental problems in rabbits include a wet chin (due to saliva), weight loss and grinding of the teeth.

If a rabbit’s incisors become overgrown it may be appropriate to extract them to avoid the need for clipping. Clipping requires regular trips to the surgery and can result in splitting of the teeth. Ask your veterinary surgeon if you think this might be appropriate for your rabbit.
